How many districts the state of Assam has as of 2023? 

Assam: 

Assam is a state located in the Northeastern part of India. This is one of the seven sister states of the region of North East India. Assam is the largest northeastern state both by area and population. It covers an area of 78,438 km2 i.e. 30,285 sq miles. 

Borders:

Assam shares its borders with Bhutan and the state of Arunachal Pradesh to the North. On the East side, it shares borders with Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur. On the south side, it shares borders with Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, and Bangladesh. On the West, Assam shares its border with Bengal.

The total number of districts in Assam 2023:

Assam is currently divided into 31 Administrative districts in the state. Till 31st December 2022, Assam has 35 districts in total in the state however on this date Assam cabinet announced the merging of four newly added districts into four existing ones and which makes a revised total of 31 districts in the State. 

Name of districts that were merged with the old district of Assam 2023:

Below is the list of four new districts that were merged with the old district of Assam and which makes the count a total of 31 districts in the state as of 2023.

1. Tamulpur is merged with Baksa district
2. Hojai district is merged with Nagaon
3. Bajali district merged with Barpeta and
4. Biswanath is merged with Sonitpur District

List of 31 districts in Assam 2023:

Barak Valley division- (Divisional office Silchar)- Districts are- Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj.

Central Assam division- (Divisional office Nagaon)- Districts are- Dima Hasao, East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Morigaon, and Nagaon.

Lower Assam division- (Divisional office Guwahati)- Districts are- Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Dhubri, Goalpara, Nalbari, Kamrup Metropolitan, Kamrup Rural, Kokrajhar and South Salmara-Mankachar

North Assam division- (Divisional office Tezpur)- Districts are- Darrang, Sonitpur, and Udalguri.

Upper Assam division- (Divisional office Jorhat)- Districts are- Charaideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Sivasagar and Tinsukia.
